Safe handling of rolled or coiled products in the workplace

Businesses that work day in, day out with rolled materials such as steel coils and pipes, rolls of conduit, wire or polythene would understand just how difficult and dangerous it can be to transport these materials around the worksite.

Whilst loading, transporting and storing these loads may be standard procedure for the manufacturers, ensuring the right equipment is also available where the products are used is just as critical.

Using your fork arms to lift rolled or coiled products may be convenient but it is inherent with issues.  Not only does this pose safety risks but can also cause fork arm failures and fractures of the fork’s bottom hooks.

When choosing the right coil handling equipment there are many factors to consider including size and weight of the load, frequency of handling and available equipment onsite.

At East West Engineering, we custom build coil handling crane and forklift attachments to suit the length, diameter and weight of the products you work with.

Custom designed lifting attachments ensure safe and efficient handling and help reduce the chance of workplace injuries and load damage as they are built for the job.

East West Engineering design and manufacture a range of specialised coil handling attachments including coil slippers, prongs, lifters, hooks and roll dispensers to suit our customer’s needs. Each unit is tailor made to suit the application, ensuring maximum support of the load being handled.

This includes elements to minimise load damage and fork failures such as a domed top surface designed to suit the load. Depending on the frequency of handling, some operations are better suited to a slip-on attachment for quick connection to a forklift. This helps reduce downtime and increase productivity when switching between attachments and forks. Operations with a crane may also require a coil hook to pick up, position or stack materials.

Unsure which coil handling system is best for your operation? A dedicated team of engineers is available to help you define, design and develop a material handling solution specific to your needs.  What's more, all engineered to order products adhere to Australian standards and come design certified.
